Default computer question

I need to rebuild my computer but my instruction manual is confusing. They say I can install RAM (in my case DDR-400) so that:

DIMM_1a+DIMM_2a = DIMM_2b + DIMM_2b

To me, this means I can do 2x512 on Channel A and 1x1024 on Channel B. But the general online populous seem to believe that it can't be done this way. Whats the truth?

Some additional info: I originally had 2x Corsair CMX512-3200XL with timings 2-2-2-5. I received a single stick of Corsair CMX1024-3200C2 with timings 2-3-3-6 (I know with this configuration, if it were to work, would be slower than the original timings). I believe the CL to be identical.

Will the configuration mentioned above work with an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe?

you made a typo... wheres 1b?

whatever it is... it should be 1024 + 512 = 1024 + 512

Fixed. But then couldn't 512+512 = 1024+ 0?

Otherwise they should have explicitly said that the banks had to be filled.

That confused me. So the channel A slot should have 1.5 GB and the channel B .5 GB?

1st slot (a1) = 512
2nd (a2) 1024
3rd(b1) 512.

you cant run dual channel with 3 sticks..... it will run at single channel.

If you want to keep dual-channel support (highly recommended) then you'll need to install ram in pairs. Other wise you'll be cutting your ram speed in half.

it means match the colors with the same size and brand of ram chips
1024 x 1024 ; 512 x 512

to get optimal performance and run in dual channel.

black with black ; yellow with yellow
