That's ignition timing. You'd have to pull the valve cover, set the crank at TDC, and check to see if the cam gears line up with the TDC mark.

When was his last tune up?
Does it not start often after driving the car, but will start again in about 10 min. If so, it could be dry solder joints in the main relay. You can repair the main relay yourself, or buy a new one.
When it won't start up, can you hear the fuel pump turn on when the key is in the on position? Does it have spark?
