Russian Driving Video
Not trying to harsh you but you live in Cali and know very little about various types of ice and how to drive on it, so you really have no room to judge what can happen on ice
I can think of one incident driving in a slight snowstorm where ice had formed on the highway. I was doing 35 thinking I would be ok then suddenly the tranny shifted gears on me (auto) and it put me in the ditch and right back out. So I slowed it down some more and was doing no more than 20-25 when suddenly I found myself doing a full 360 in the road not more than 1/4 mile later.
Shit happens and not much you can do once it begins either.

My best friend's dad is a paraplegic as a result of crashing his trooper car while pursuing someone because he hit a patch of black ice on the highway and rolled several times. Ice is a nasty element when it comes to the roads. Once you lose traction it's game over.
Sidenote: You can think of my best friend's dad like Joe Swanson from Family guy. Former cop who became paralyzed from duty, so he can't use his legs but he makes up for it with his massive upper body. He acts like him too, the similarities are uncanny.
