a tidal wave is caused by the gravitational effect of the moon and is on the surface (no deeper than 30 feet), while a tsunami is triggered by an earthquake, landslide, volcano, or meteorite and extends from the surface to the ocean floor
h:taken off dictionary.com, i knew they were different depending on how they were form, just didn't know the exact definition
