Take a can of air and blow out your computer, see if there's dust heating it up.

when it went black.... did the monitor go into its no signal / standby mode?

if so, then its hardware related...

if not, software.

what kind of vid card?

Nvidia drivers are soooooooo much easier to install with the Envy script.
