attn: network guys
my friend has a problem up at school, she has only one ethernet jack for a two person room... usually i'd just say router and forget it, but the jack is supplying an DHCP assigned IP in the 192.168.X.X range...
i've never run into switching an already switched device, and i was wondering how i would go about getting a router/switch/hub linked up and working correctly in the room.

a wired router wouldn't work? you sure?
I had had a 4 port router back in college and it did exactly what you're looking for.
if the room is for 2 people and there's only 1 internet jack ... the university's IT / LAN department should have to provide some solution for this.

i thought IP's of 192.168.X.X couldnt be routed because they already are...
:edit:
most schools give each jack a specific IP address that isn't already a part of a private network, i know it will work for ip's outside of the 192.168 range... i'm just wondering basically if you could in theory plug one router into another one and still have everything work (but of course not having control over any of the settings of the first one)

alright, i've basically figured it out... i think if i turn off DHCP on the router it should allow the DHCP of the schools network take care of everything thx guys
edit: you can plug in a router to it just fine, just use a different internal IP range. Like 10.x.x.x. As long as there's no conflict with something already on the network, you don't need to change their setup, just yours. It'd work fine.
