I'm sharing a few folders on the network for people to find things. The problem is that when they type in my computer name, they get a window asking them for a login username and a password. It only works when I type in my username and password. I've looked online on how to turn this off but everything that they say, I've done.
Any help?
I would prefer to get a seperate program to manage these folders and to share them, so they will be shared in both XP and Linux.
Oh yeah, I'm running XP Pro and I have the advanced file sharing on. I have the user 'Everyone' allowed to read the files, but not mod them.

Yes.
Right click, Sharing and Security, Enable security, Advanced, go to Permissions, add Everyone, enable Read. Go to Security, added Everyone. Ticked Read and Execute, List folder contents, Read, Read Permissions.

 

So these folders you're sharing with everyone else is on your personal drives and not part of the shared network folders yes?

Control Panel>User Accounts>Click your username>Remove my password.

Advanced file sharing will always ask for user/pass, simple file sharing will never ask for user/pass.

Everyone..... is a blanket group for all the users on your computer.

you need to make user accounts on your computer for other people if you want them to access it.

 

I used to have it with advanced file sharing before and nobody had to enter a password.
