My home theatre supports optical. And now my new computer does too.
Is optical really worth the extra money for the cords? Does it matter if I get a long cable or not? I want to go with like a 15-20 foot, if its actually going to get me better sound.

Well, weather or not you'll notice it I don't know. An optical cable is immune to interference as it is light. Length isn't an issue, although sharp bends are.

Way off. AR makes a very economical optical cable.
