Default bumpstop removal?

anyways, i figured my celica was a lill too bouncy after the teins were put in....everything looked fine, so i was out of ideas....anyways, i talked to the guy with same setup, and he said:

"did you cut the bumpstops. I took off about a quarter of an inch off of each one before installing them onto the shocks. If you didint do that, then that is why your ride is so bouncy. The "no shock" feel you are getting could also be from your bumpstops being too long, and leaving your shocks with very very little travel. Meaning how much the shock can compress and decompress when going over a bump."

what he said makes sense....so, i went searching for info....i read from a celica forum member that the bumpstops can be taken off without removing the whole strut assembly.... here's wat he said:

"You don't need to remove the struts. Jack the car up, adjust the coil so the spring is not compressed ie lose on the strut. Remove top nut, push the rod down"

I have a few questions:

1. wat does it mean by adjust the coil?

2. and which top nut is it? the 3 in the engine bay?

3. and what rod did he mean?

thanx for the help

i believe the bumpstop is the orange piece of rubber in the pic above. It prevents your shocks from bottoming out. Those should be there, so they shouldn't cause trouble, but maybe you're right and they need to be removed. Someone with a little more expertise than me should help you w/ this h:

when lowering your car, you almost ALWAYS need to cut the bump stop.
that pic above is perfect.

take the top bolt off off the shock (the one that goes through the shock tower), take out the lca bolt so the bottom of the shock will lower. then you should be able to pull off the top washer and pull the bump stop out.

cut at least the bottom section off.

lca = lower control arm bolt

1) Are you talking about Tein springs or full coilovers?
2) If you just had springs installed, the bouncy feeling may be attributed to blown struts (completely devoid of oil or gas).
3) It's highly recommended that you install aftermarket struts when installing springs with a higher spring rate and lower ride height.

Just my 2 cents

got these installed brand new:

1. teins s-tech springs
2. KYB GR-2 shocks (yes, they are OEM replacements h
3. KYB boots and bumpstops

it's not the shocks for sure... read the 1st post regarding the bumpstops and how it affects the shocks

Holy shit...this man should not work on a cars suspension
I can't wait for the "My car just lost all control" thread.

LCA = Lower Control Arm
Bumpstop does not get removed but cut it about half and it should be good.

Ditch the OEM replacements and get some shocks made for performance. The problem you get is that the strut does not have enough room to do it's job so it bottoms out and causes the bounce you speak of. A good or even passable aftermarket shock has a shorter strut length to compensate for the lower stance of the car.

yes, i'm no suspension guy h: i admit tht

it's for my DD, so i got the GR2.... not looking for much performance here... as for the bumpstops, i know i need to cut it (and not remove it)... i was just asking how to access it without removing the whole assembly.....
