Wireless B = 6.5 Mbit/s (typical), 11 Mbit/s (max), ~150 feet
Wireless G = 25 Mbit/s (typical), 54 Mbit/s (max), ~100 feet

Those are approximates, actual numbers will vary....

B and G are compatible with each other.

If your network card in your computer is B, it will connect to both B and G routers at B speeds.

If your network card in your computer is G, it will connect to B routers at B speeds and G routers at G speeds.

As for those numbers, G is faster but B has a bit more range.

Only range wise. Speeds are better on the G.
