did this used to be christmas and new years or has it always included channukah and kwanza?

I think it was a generic term to wrap Xmas and New Years together. This way, people didn't have to write 2 cards.

Since it works for more than Xmas, it grew into a more universal meaning.

It was expanded to include Hannakuh and Kwanza in 1967. Legislation was passed.

i went to macy's on saturday with my girl. up at the register, they had gift cards for sale with various "festive" designs.

half said nothing.
half said "happy holidays".
one said "happy hanukkah" in huge print.
none said "merry christmas".

heh.
