they should have done it at night. And yes, we did that in high school chemistry.
There is something even better, I think it's rust and aluminum and something else, that went lit will burn hot enough to melt Pyrex glasses.

camping supply stores actually sell magnisium bars. you shave off some of the bar then use the striker on the opposite side to create spark and instant fire starter. works very well.
