Missing father found "face down"
he did stay put.. remember that they were missing since Nov. 25. he took off on Saturday (Dec. 2) to look for help.
that means that they were potential stuck and in the same place for 7 days without seeing a soul. do you think that maybe he decided that he didn't want to watch his family die right in front of him?
this man should be respected, not ridiculed. he gave his life in trying to save his family. it's only unfortunate that all he had to do was wait for a few more days, but how could he know? they had seen no one for a week!

Shouldn't be ridiculed? You are right he should be held as a shining example of how you go into a snow region during winter. Preperations and having extra gear with you is not needed when you can just load the family into the minivan with no blankets, water, flares or emergency equipment.
Yep...fucking genius he should be a god in all our eyes

h:i forgots the part where he was already stuck for a week....
in that case it was time to start moving...although i still stick to it was a generally moronic move to leave a traveled route...albiet a currently seasonal one.
Ok so he stayed with the car, smart move. He still left the road which was a sure thing in trade for the culvert which means holes under the snow, water hazzards and unknown directions once off the road.

Read the fucking article and you will see the same thing I did. It said he walked down the road then left the road down a drainage culvert.
Now everything I have ever known and seen says you always stay with the road if there is one and you always follow the natural curve of the road. If there is a river next to the road then walk downstream.
We are not talking rocket science here we are talking common sense in a survival situation. The consequences of failure are not something so easy as hitting the start button again, instead you pay with your life as happened here.
Of course the guy was from SF so maybe he had never been more than 5 feet from a bus stand and had no common sense. Too bad his family will now pay the price in pain from his death for his stupidity.

the family was missing since thanksgiving. they survived on burning the tires and outdoor survival tactics that this man had. sometimes desperate measures need to be taken if you feel you will never be found for a week or so?? he wasn't stupid, he was desparate to get his family home safe. too bad it had to happen this way.

he didnt plan on getting lost in the snowstorm. common sense sometimes dont make sense when ur out in the middle of nowhere desparate to find help for your family after a week.

Quit being a dipshit yourself and think about everything you have been taught about cold weather travel.
Now take that info and apply it to an unknown quantity like traveling 600 miles then going off the highway up into the hills for snow.
Now think about the safety of your family.
Now what is your final decision?
Everyone is taught about winter travel in bad weather and what should be carried with and how to keep yourself and your family relativley safe. This guy was stupid and took the risks which resulted in him paying an ultimate price.
I am not "hardcore" as you like to say, but I have no sympathy for stupidity that almost costs your entire family it's life. Yeah it's a bummer he died, but it was bound to happen anyways so why should I feel bad for him especially the way it happened?

see asiandoood's post. he said it better than i.
we just see it differently obviously. i feel bad for the man. he died not knowing his family was safe. what an awful, awful way to go. but at least he tried to do something. whether he made all the mistakes in the world or not one, he still gets my utmost respect.

Saw his post and it still doesn't change the fact he went off the main road and found trouble completely unprepared for anything but the mall.

he was desperately trying to find help for his family, after almost two weeks in the freezing cold, i can't believe you feel nothing for him after making a mistake. who knows why he went off the road anyway? maybe he slipped and fell? not everyone is as good at surviving in the wilderness as you are.
