You might need to take it to a recycle center. Check at electronics stores they might collect them for disposal. We used to have to put our batteries in a ziplock bag on top of our dumpster so they could be disposed of in a different area instead of with the regular trash, because of the minute amount of mercury in them.

Nicad, NiMH and Li-Ion batteries should be recycled. Be environmentally conscious - do NOT throw these batteries in the trash.
