Interesting.

I assume you worked on a portion of this film?

I am curious about the smoke rendering process. From what I have heard it is a rather long process due to the semi transparent nature of smoke.

Not sure I am a fan of the camera shake in the frames, but I am guessing that it either smooths out in the final cut or has reasoning to it.

No I didn't work on this one. They just showed it to us at work today. 3D smoke isn't that hard to render. From what I have done it's all particle effects, which is just based on a few equations and an animated gradient for a color map. It could differ between studios though. All of it looks pretty intense, so as you have seen, they were rendered in a lot of passes.
