If you didn't notice why he didn't come back after 5 seconds it was because he disappeared with the girl. That's why they zoomed into the polaroid of the day before if you didn't catch it. Charlie (i think that's her name) her birthday was the day before and previously hiro wasn't in the picture but at the very end when his buddy is walking all around he's smiling in the picture with her.
