Next gen is breakthrough technology not a rehashing of the same ideas that have been used before.
The rendering on each of those machines is nothing of any real note or even stellar compared to the last release. The most that has come on these systems is the ability to store a slight amount more information on a disc but it is all rendered and read pretty much the same as it always has been.

and think Sega Saturn when you talk about next gen technologies going into game systems.
the Saturn was technologically superior to the PSX and while less powerful then the N64 it featured a few more advancements that we wouldn't even see until this generation.
I'm speaking specifically of it's use of two processors and how they compare the new multi-cores of today. 10 years ago programmers did not know how to utilize both of the cores properly, and up until this generation we haven't seen this cutting edge use of multiple threads and multiple cores--- and the only reason we are seeing it now is because all the programmers have been working on their multiple core programming over the last few years.
In short, when your target programmers can't figure out how to do what they are supposed to with the hardware, then the hardware will inevitably fall short of expectations.
The Saturn was a prime example of timing and rushing advanced technologies to the market before they were ready.
if we gave most of these programmers ray-tracing they would end up giving us output equal to the last generation on hardware that costs 3x as much.
