What temps to exhaust pipes usually get upto?

Obviously a few hundred as water will instantly steam off.

depends....operating temperatures are generally around 600 degrees. They can fluctuate higher though. I wouldn't be too worried about it, but I have seen older cats that a re a bit clogged burn off high temp paint.
