For sniping most entry level guns are fine. What you want for long range accuracy is a good bolt that gives a solid spin to the ball and a nice 18" barrel.

Are you going to be doing woodsball or arena/speedball type stuff? For woodsball I recommend the Tippman A5 - all mechanical - solid, reliable, and accurate. Plenty of upgrades available as well. I dislike the electronic triggers for outdoors play - they aren't as reliable and are susceptible to moisture. It starts to rain, and everybody with an electronic trigger runs for their cars, while everyone with manual guns runs for the woods. :rick:

Sports Authority carries good stuff around here, I got my A-5, 12oz tank, and mask in a kit for like $250 after I found a 25% off coupon floating around on the net.

stick with a decent full mechanical gun for a while, learn how it works, upgrade your stuff, new bolt, valve, barrel etc..

if you can swing it get compressed air instead of co2, any change in atmosphere messes with co2 and does a number on your gun and you start breaking balls in the chamber and not shooting a consistent fps
plus compressed air is free if you have a compressor thats good enough or a buddy with one

buy the best mask thats out there, i dont know what it is now but it used to be a jt spectra, double layer lense so it doesnt fog, full ear protection

check out www.warpig.com and their forums and such, they know more that i ever could

airsoft or paintball?

I like both, but airsoft is a lot nicer to the wallet.

check out ebay, but beware of electronic trigger guns, I have replaced the t board in my Spyder Imagine 3 times, but you will have alot more fun with higher bbs, as far as long range shoots, it all depends on you barrel, bolt, and paint, dont buy shitty paint, you will hate yourself for doing it later, I use Marballizers but they can be kinda pricey at $70 for a 1000 balls

Anything more than 14" Slows the ball down and reduces the distance a bit too much for me.
