iPod Users, please read...
On another note, how would you remove songs from your iPod? I am really considering returning this thing this weekend and want to remove all my personal property. Do I view it as a drive and delete all the files how there? How about the name of the iPod, can that be rename?

Sorry dude, but this is user error on your part. Go through your prefs and check settings. The ipod and itunes play .mp3's fine without converting. If itunes is converting you files to an .mp4 format, they will be .aac files (apples mp4).
Just open itunes, drag your files from your computer to the library in itunes on the upper left hand side. If you have itunes set in prefs to add them to your library, it will add them to your library. If you have itunes set to manage your library, it will also re-title your files based on your tags. I'd reccomend turning both of these off since it sounds like you already have your music in the place you want. If itunes gives you any messages when adding your .mp3's tell me exactly what it says.
What I think is happening is this: You add the files to itunes. itunes adds them to your itunes library library and converts them to whatever file format you have in prefs (prefs>importing) leaving your original files intact. If you just set itunes to not add files to your library it should solve it.
Yet another person blaming the company for ignorance.
People bitch about ipods and windows when its all user error. Either learn about the product you buy or shut up. People that come to me for help at work are always cursing the computers "Why is this...." Blah blah blah. Hey! Its not the computer! Its you!

itunes wont convert unless you tell it to. you must be telling it to convert the library OR they were copied using WMplayer into WMA-- then it will convert.
the other problem you might be having is that you are uising that shitty itunes 7. itunes 7 is retarded and should be downgraded ASAP. it WILL try to reconvert your files because it's taking out the empty space in the files for it's seamless playback--
just install itunes 6 and you'll be cool.

I do however like the interface better. I like how the ipod updater in now integrated with itunes. Gapless playback is nice in itunes, I wish my old 4g 40 non-color would support it too. The gaps in Dark Side of the Moon and many other seamless albums piss me off.
Just restore it with the software. You can do this with the latest version of itunes.

I'm not bashing iPods/Apple, just don't like how the software works. All I'm saying is that if this is how it is suppose to work, then it's not for me.
I have a PDA that I used for playing my MP3s. To upload my files, I copy them to the local drive and play them with the local media player. That's it! If I choose to make a playlist, I use the PDA to do that. It just seems a lot of work on this machine, and if this is how it works, like I stated, it's not for me. That's all I'm asking people. Thanks.

One thing to know is: to use itunes and a ipod well, you need to have good tags. If your tags suck, it will be hard to find your music
I love the ipod itself, and understand there reasoning for doing things the way they do. But there effort isn't going to prevent pirating music, IMO. Just would be cool if there was a simple drag and drop program, but thats just how apple is. I remember back in the day, I had a Mac Performa 600. The CD-Rom drive was an added option, $3500 with a 14 inch monitor and crap HP printer.. Im curious how far they've come, haven't owned one since.
