Default Geek question

If I want to use a computer as a file server only to dump and retrieve files, do I need to have an OS installed on it?

To offshoot from this topic, if I had a file server would I have to write a script to load files/programs upon start-up? Like a network loads printer drivers, ect.

i'd just use a live-CD or something, there has to be a knoppix-like live CD out there for creating a file server

You don't need anything special for a computer to function as a file server. If you want more options, get some form of server OS. Depending on your needs, mabye a simple external HD with network capibilities would work.

just do a base linux install w/ a samba server, then use iptables (firewall) to block all IP addresses outside of your lan.
