It's not too hard, I guess I kinda don't think about it really.
The thing you are running into is the bokeh or the falloff of the focus. At 1.8 it begins to get real precise as to where the range of focus is...you should try shooting with a 1.2 sometime

Damn 1.2 must be the "no flash" lense. Ya that is my problem with such a small depth of field. Ill get it sooner or later.

So far I have the Kit lense and this one. Any others you recommed for a beginner? Thanks Nightshade

Play with what you have for a bit and get used to it. Once you are comfortable you will begin to see what you need.

I only have 3 lenses in my kit and it is just what I need to make it all work for me.

I have:

Thrifty 50 (50mm 1.8)
Zoom (70-200mm 2.8 L)
Wideangle (11-17mm 4.5-5.6_

It's all I really need for my business, although I have been thinking about the 80mm 1.2 portrait lense...but I don't have 2k to blow right now

no such thing as a no flash lens imo.

at 1.8 (i have a nikon 1.4) like john said you really have to pay attention. you can use the bokeh to make the subject jump out of the picture. the rebelXT should have the dof preview button. use it

Yeah, that's lots o' fun... I have a 1.4 for the PZ1. Thought about the 1.2 but found the 1.4 used for 75.00. I use it indoors shooting available light at small concerts.
