Ford, GM discussed merger, alliance — report
News comes as automakers pare work forces, close plants to stem losses

DETROIT - Executives of General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. have discussed a possible merger or alliance, the trade journal Automotive News reported Monday. Both companies declined comment on the report.

Automotive News quoted what it said were several people familiar with the talks as saying that discussions involving senior executives began in July and are not taking place now.

Ford should just terminate the Mercury line much like Chrysler did with Plymouth & Eagle. GM could merge some lines together (Chevy & Pontiac) and get rid of GMC & Buick

Yea, instead of merging, both companies need to just downsize themselves. They are already laying off thousands, next they need to axe a subsidiary(s) and remove unprofitable cars from their line-up.

bingo.

all these brands under the same corporate umbrella confuse the shit out of the public and divide sales among shared platforms.

using an old ref here ...

but back in the day, making people choose between a chevy cavalier and a pontiac sunfire is so damn stupid. They're the SAME freaking car.

When looking at Honda, they never wanted to bring over the CTR because it'd screw with Integra / RSX sales. Although a shitty decision for the tuner market, it was the right one.

Dividing sales among your own company = bad idea.

I think I should approach one of the companies and say "Look, you are in serious need of an analyst that won't sugarcoat your real situation. Give me a huge salary and I'll get you guys operating economically sound like a jewish cornerstore."
