Default hell yes, it was worth it.. v.inspiron9100batterylifeandheat

i have a dell inspiron 9100 notebook PC.

i bought it almost exactly 2 years ago, and i've always liked this thing except for two annoyances:
1- battery life sucks
2- it gets hot

given that it's a desktop P4 in there, i guess it wasn't really that much of a surprise.

that said, a while back i read that with a northwood P4, it will run cooler, as will battery life increase. today i decided to give it a try. my desktop has a northwood P4 2.4CGHz. the laptop, a prescott P4 2.8EGHz. i swapped them. i also used arctic silver 5 as a thermal compound.

the results? holy shit. the temp is now hovering at around 100F as i type this thread, whereas before idle temp was at i think 127F.

right now battery is at 79%, and it's telling me i still have 2 hours remaining. i expect this to go up as the battery adjusts. before, i don't think i had 2 hours at a full charge. at this point it'd probably be telling me 1:15..

under load, i think i got the old proc. to 130s.. this time, 110s.

further testing to be done, but man, i'm freakin' psyched. and yes, i'm a nerd.

oh, and now my desktop (read: gaming PC) will get a faster proc. win, win all around.

cliffs: i swapped my prescott P4 in my laptop for a northwood P4, and the processor temperature has dropped by as much as 30 degrees at idle, and battery life has noticably increased.

My desktops P4 hovers around 112F, I read max operating is 95F

The processor is equipped with the same cooling fan as supplied.

well, if i were to do it all over again, i'd would have gone with a Pentium M. however, 2 years later, i've found an excellent compromise (so far, anyway)..

LT, you sure that's not celcius?
