I think die, der, and das are all ways of saying "the".
Just like gender goes with words, "la muchacha" these go with specific words.
"Die Katze"(the cat). "Der Hund"(the hound aka dog) you cant have die hund, or der katze.

It's all feminine and masculine
I took German in HS...There's so many different explatives it's outrageous...and das is Neuter....so it can go with whatever
