In case you are wondering, that was in 1972...I think. Made a bet with a friend of mine as to who could quit for the longest time. He's dead, so if I start smoking he wins because he won't start again, and I don't like losing bets.

It's Ironic that OLDMAN sees his situation the way he does. His desire to NOT lose a bet is > than his desire to begin smoking again. Someone jonesing for a smoke could just say they one, because the the other half of the bet is no long living. OLDMAN is smart enough to not see it that way.
