RB is probably thinking back to when the original VW Golf was rebadged as the VW Rabbit here in the states, and is unaware that the new MkV Golf is again being sold as the Rabbit here in the states.

The Mk1 and Mk2 [Golf] are pretty sturdy overall, but given the age of the cars and your location, I would be particularly cautious about rust.

I had a 91 GTi 16v for five years (96-01) and had no mechanical problems other than those of my own making. The suspension is rather crude, but it's still an enjoyable car in a retro sort of way.

EDIT: Oh... we're talking about the "new" Rabbit. :a:

I knew a guy with an A1 chassis Cabriolet in highschool. That thing was broken constantly.

With the old 8v motor?
If so, that's kind of surprising... it must have had a hard life.
I wailed on my Mk2 constantly and with regular maintenance, it ran strong and clean.

At any rate, since the OP is talking about the new Mk5 "Rabbit", all I can really say is that I have my doubts about current VW reliability.

From the sidelines, it seems to be a "luck of the draw" situation. If you get a good one, you're set... but if you get a dud that has problems early on, you're doomed.

For as much as VW is asking, I would pass... at least until they get a handle on their quality control issues again. I don't like the idea of rolling the dice when making an $20,000 "investment".
