Default To steal a loaf of bread...

Tonight after work another manager and I were outside in the parking lot chatting while her car warmed up. As we're talking about the day and how busy it was we both see a man carrying something that looked quite bloody, over his shoulder. He passed under a street lamp and we both noticed that it was half of a deer carcass. In this state it's illegal to "steal" a deer that you hit while driving; its claimed by one of the Indian reservations game people. So we decide to call the police since he's walking around town with dead animal over his shoulder. 20 minutes or so after calling 911, 4 police vehicles showed up and officers ran into the grocery store by our work. The man who had the deer had, for some reason, gone into the store and the manager then called the police.

He was clearly homeless and was most likely stealing it to feed himself or other people. After he was detained, my guilt set in. Maybe I should have just let that go.. is it ok to steal a loaf of bread to feed your starving family?

In this case, I dont even see it as stealing a loaf of bread.

I see it as a guy picking up roadkill to eat. h:

Yeah I wouldn't have snitched on a guy eating a dead deer. Geez, feel bad enough for him. Oh well.

the roadkill issue is more of a safety thing than anything, cause the intestines can rupture and poison the meat. you may have saved a life..

I don't think a homeless guy would be that desperate to eat that part. Or would he. h:

It's bad enough he has to feed himself with roadkill, you had to go and call the cops on the poor guy. :squint:

hard choice to make. the store called too so it would be out of your hands. hopefully the police can find out where he is living and help them all out. get a shelter to stop by and bring them food. check up on them. maybe get him some healthcare. he could be mentally ill. truly sad.. if all he stole was bread then he is truly needy. a loaf of bread isnt going to be a big ticket item to exchange for any vices. i hope the store doesnt press charges. there would not be any gain for it.
