partial money
How much of a bill needs to be there for them to exchange it for a fresh one?
Moms basement got a bit of water from this rain and a large bill was damaged. 45-50% of the bill and a serial number still on it.

SO if you owe someone $5 and all you have is a 20 you can tear 25% off and give it to them?

I always thought you needed >50% of the bill and the bank would give you the full amount. If you have 49% or less you're out of luck. I've never tried to exchange a torn bill, however, so who knows?
Well according to the US Treasury, it needs to be over half. But if you can give enough of a statement as to what happened to the rest of it and they believe that it was actually destroyed, then they can give you an exchange.
But that's the US Treasury, you have to send it to them. I'm looking for just a bank to take it and give me the cash.

in this article they say that if 3/5 or more of the bill is intact then it's worth the full value. They also say that if 2/5 or more of the bill is intact then it's worst half it's face value.
that would mean that i could take a $20 but it at the 2/5 point bring both piece the the bank and request $30 for it?!?!
something is wrong here....
