How do you know if the system has an active subwoofer? All this home A/V stuff is new to me. h:

it would say h:

active = sub has its own amp.

Pioneer isn't a bad name. Active WOULD be better, but with 600w, you'll be fine. That's a good one to start out on. If you have cable/directv or tivo with an optical out port, you can connect it to this unit to get digital sound. It's a world of difference between dolby surround and dolby digital surround.

Edit: Whenever the programing is encoded in dolby digital
