I'm thinking about joining the AmeriCorps or the National Guard.

The two are quite different, AmeriCorps you basically get shipped out to somewhere in the United States (likely the Gulf Coast right now) and they pay for your living expenses while you help rebuild devestated areas or other community service related events of a grand scale.

National Guard is obviously the army, I'd want to be put into the Reserves or go part time for the extra money and just give me something to do once a week.

I kind of feel the need to help out in some way and am considering both options seriously. I need army folks advice on this matter and any suggestions anybody else has.

 

Isn't the national guard once a month, not once a week?

 

I think it's once every weekend, then two weeks during the Summer time. I'd have to double check

I think it's one weekend a month and then a couple weeks in the summer. But right now, it means you get called up into active duty most likely.

 

They'll probably try to pull the bait n switch.

You sign up for 1 weekend a month... two weeks a year domestic service... and before you know it you are in Iran building some shit for 2 years.

 

fuck that man. go to college instead. seriously. if your gonna go for soemthing like that, jsut go full blown army. national gaurd have 6 year committment shortest time i believe. 1 weekend a month 2 weeks a year. 10,000 sign on bonus, college payback available. blah blah.

i would seriously go to college if you have the chance instead of going into one of those.

 

I'm already in college, but to be honest with you I don't know what I want to do.

I'm looking into the Coast Guard right now.
