Default computer problems

I'm building my dads computer.

I plugged everything in and I was good to go.. but then I started having errors during the windows installation.

Right at the very end I was getting a very fast error message (too fast to read) but it looked like a BSOD.

So then somehow I was able to get into windows. I installed drivers and such, but it would reboot on its own with a MACHINE_PAGE_EXCEPTION.

I've done some research, but I can't narrow down the problem.

My roommate was screwing around and dropped the processor on the floor (no noticeable damage) so I'm starting to think I need to return it...

any ideas?

Its most likely not the harddrive (SATA), bc I'm using an IDE drive now - and its just black screening.. So I'm unsure.

I've read the MS info on the error (and its useless).. Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

Whenever a processor is either bad or on its way out...i know for me..i always get some very weird errors. I would look into making sure all the pins on the processor are straight....if that doesnt work....i suggest just hooking up the PC with the bare essentials...1 HD...1 CD drive....if it's got built in video and sound..then just leave them.....then add stuff one by one if there's extras to see if it's a hardware failure.

Procs are pretty fragile... I would try to get that replaced first. There is a possibility that you've installed the wrong drivers for an important system component (i.e. video, any I/O controller). I've had exceptions like that when the windows install didn't know exactly what a device was, and I guessed one to see if it would work.

http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

Download this: http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.zip

Burn to a cd and boot that new pc off this and let it run over night. See if you get any errors. It's mainly designed for testing the memory, but it's also a good test for anything else involved in that process, including the processor.

It boots directly from the cd and does nothing with the hard drive, so it won't mess up your install of windows.

Sounds like hardware to me. First try the memtest that someone posted, aftwards if you dont have any errors try downloading DFT from http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm (the CD image one). If you can get the proc replaced do that too. also you may want to try removing unnecessary stuff ie cd drive, pci cards, video card(if you have onboard). On an off chance how big is your PSU, if your running a older 250watt with a new 3.4ghz P4 that could cause issues too. Let me know if that solves your problem if not I can probably think of more. Good luck

thanks for the help guys. I will run the memtest tonight.

The spec on my psu is 550W

I'm running a 820 Pentium-D Socket 775
Nvidia 7900GT
1 GB 667 K-Byte RAM
Asus P5SD2-X Mobo
300 GB Maxtor SATA drive.

My guess is its the SATA controller on the mobo, but I'll see how the mem test goes.

allright well the memtest came up with 16 errors and it probably made about 8 passes. It particularly had a problem with test 4 and 8 (those errors just occured all the time).

So I switched memory banks and so far (fingers crossed) I'm error free. If this holds up then it is most likely a mobo problem. Im only using 1 of 4 banks (1 gb). I'll have to decide if I want to replace the mobo.

edit: didnt hold up

Going to go try another stick of DDR2

A bios update might help. It looks like they did have some ram issues. My old MSI board had trouble with Hyperx until they released an update to fix that.

ok I bought a 1gb 400 mhz stick from best buy because I figured, if its the RAM I can just replace the one I have and return it back without incurring shipping charges.

So then I run memtest, and holy shit, I get 3164 errors right off the bat. My guess is the mobo, any ideas?

I'll try updating the BIOS but I dont feel that its the problem.

If the bios update don't work contact Asus. They'll probably have you try some other stuff then give you an RMA.
