when you tell a lame story, you should end it with something more exciting, like, "then a bunch of hot chicks got naked" or "then I found $50 laying around". That way, people are distracted from the lameness of your story and instead focus on the cool ending.
And back on topic, yeah, that is completely b.s. Even if it has been in a serious wreck. Unless it has been in a wreck since the photos were taken and stripped of any worthwhile parts.
