Computer gods/gurus, your assistance please
I'm trying to install a game onto my computer, but it keeps locking up at various times throughout the first cd. It keeps giving me an error messages like....
" The installer was unable to read the file "<unknown>". This error may be caused by problems with the media or drive at --for example, a scratched or dirty CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, hard drive corruption, or a networking problem while downloading the installer. (The data being read was "Repack-MPQ\Data#patch.MPQ\World\Maps\PVPZone03\PVPZone03_ 29_29.adt", and the error code was 38.) If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (MPQFile::Read)"
I know for a fact it can't be the game, since it's BRAND new, right out of the box, + it does the same thing if I try to install another older game I'd since deleted. However, the confusing part I don't get is that I can pop a music cd in, and it'll play that plus it'll let me rip the songs to itunes. The fact that it lets me do this makes me think the laser isnt bad and something else is being overlooked.
My question is it the cd drive that's bad or is merely coincidence the games wouldn't install but it would let me rip songs to my itunes? I've done everything I can think of, from swapping power cables to seeing if there was an updated driver (which there isn't). I'm at a loss of ideas here.... please can anyone add some insight I may have missed?
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long read. :happysad:

I would try a lens cleaner or at least a can of air. Audio cd's are much more forgiving than data.

I should have mentioned earlier that I tried installing my cousin's copy of the game also with same outcomes. Just tried a can of air also, to no avail.

Yea, I'm thinking about making a run to Walmart (they're the only thing around here open today) and trying out a cheapie drive. :happysad:
