I recently got a hankering for a pre-3 Mazda Protege... The mazdaspeed one is supposed to be a real hoot to drive (aside from a sissy transmission), and the stock 2.0 one and the MP5 both share the same motor aside from the turbo, which means easy upgrade to turbo.

The only problem I came up with was that you'd need a backup transmission if you drove it hard and the non-mazdaspeed ones don't have LSD.

the thought of a Matrix XRS has crossed my mind. I found a 9-3 ARC for 15900 with reasonable mileage. Its about an hour and a half away so i'm going to have to find some time to set aside and go look at it. right now, thats sitting at the top of my list.

it's not going to be any more out of your range than a wrx and will probably be cheaper if you're considering buying used.
