It's a flying ant also known as a piss ant...if you have ever worked on a farm and tilled fields you will understand the term piss ant

When I worked on the ranch during haying season I had to wear body cover because they would cover my head so thick you could literally wipe your hand over your head and kill thousands of them.

Red and black ants exist in SloCal if there is a colony within a half mile of you or so he may have gotten off course. Just because you may not see red ants doesn't mean they aren't there.
