In California there's ways to do it, but you end up with a hacked version of one without a detachable magazine; Or without a pistol grip.

I'm not sure about in MA (In fact, I think MA is pretty strict on gun laws too), but in about 45 states they're completely legal in semi-automatic form. No state has an easy process to procure a fully automatic weapon of any kind.

yeah, if at all, i figured only a semi-auto version would be legal..

i guess i should look into getting a license to own a firearm first..

Check your laws. Here, you only need to pass the Handgun Safety Test for uhhh a handgun h:

Semi auto
purchased through an FFL dealer
Second hand purchase must pass through FFL hands for legality
Fuck a license for a rifle
Enjoy your right to bear arms

They are legal in all states in semi configuration...except Cali most likely (cuz Cali sucks). You can buy them across the counter with no problem at all.

MA has very strict gun laws (maybe even stricter than CA), so be sure to check what constitutes an assault weapon in MA. Go to a gunstore and ask....
