Whats so different between regular shoes and driving shoes? Thinner, more flexible sole, breathable material, and lighter?
Do you change out of them before walking on the street at all?

Mostly in the summer I'm always driving bare-footed. It is illegal and also it's illegal to drive with sandals in CT. I love to drive bare-footed because I can feel the pedals better.

If I'm putzing around then I drive with sandals on but if it's a long trip the lack of support makes my leg go dead. It's fine except heel-toe downshifts are kind of tricky with a sandal floppin around down there. Luckily since my car has nicely placed pedals I can still pull it off alright. I tried barefoot once or twice and didn't particularly like it.

When I was in highschool my dad would yell at me if I tried to walk out the front door in the morning with sandals on and drive to school. In fact, when I went to go get me a pair of Birkenstocks, he said the only way he would let me drive with them is if I got the kind with the strap on the back. I really wanted the kind with no strap on the back, but if it was gonna save me from gettin hassled every day about my footwear, it was worth it.
