A 34-year-old man who was flung off the back of a pickup truck last week while riding on top of a stack of mattresses died Friday from a head injury, Austin police announced today.
Witnesses told police that a 1997 Ford truck was heading eastbound Wednesday in the 2300 block of Gracy Farms Lane near Metric Boulevard, traveling at approximately 10 mph to 15 mph with its emergency flashers on. Jose Cortez was on top of "a large number of unsecured mattresses in the bed of the truck," police said. "The wind caused the top mattress to lift up and fly out of the truck, taking Cortez with it."
Police said Cortez landed on the road and struck his head on the curb. He was transported to Brackenridge Hospital on Wednesday and died from his injuries early Friday morning, police said.
The incident remains under investigation and police are asking anyone with information to contact detectives at 974-8211. Cortez's death is the 18th traffic fatality in 2006.
