They're all Metro stations. One particularly bigass Metro station where you can switch from the Red Line to the Blue Line, that's close to Dupont Circle (my dad's office is there), is Metro Center.

Most of the stuff to do around Capitol Hill is more for the government set to hit up for power lunches or after-work cocktails, so I wouldn't bother with around there for the night time.

If you want a large variety of chill places that are expensive and snobby, check out any of the hotels around town. I go to lots of hotel bars in DC (and Chicago too). They're neat. One that's really good is Le Bar, which is in the Sofitel at 15th & M St NW. There's Off The Record in the Hay-Adams Hotel right across Lafayette Park from the White House. Lots of politicians and journalists and staffers hang out in there. These are cool as long as you can pull off a reasonable bit of yuppie, there's a few others that are a bit more pretentious.

For more regular type bars, Dupont Circle is a pretty good area, honestly I don't go there too much just because my parents live out in the suburbs, and there are more suburban places which are easier to get to that have regular bars too. So when actually in DC I tend to go to slightly more interesting places. 18th Street in Adam's Morgan has a ton of places of interest. Saki is like a late-night sushi bar & club. Lots of eurotrash hang out in there, and well, anyone else who isn't necessarily from europe but is functionally eurotrash. The Reef is alright, they have a whole ton of fish tanks up there and a good view from the top floor of the building out over the city. Felix usually has live jazz but is pricey. My favorite bar in that area is Madam's Organ. It's in an old 4-story row house on 18th street, there's a total of 5 bars in it including one that's on the roof. They have a house blues band who are friggin great on the main floor, or guest bands, and some other stuff.

For clubs, I don't know so much, I'm more of a bar type of person. But I've heard that Five and MCCXXIII (roman numeral for 1223 ) are pretty alright. There's also some stuff down in Georgetown but that's a friggin hike, and there's no access by Metro, but you can take a cab.

Hope that gives ya a decent start. Check out the City Guide on washingtonpost.com (you can search by geographic area, type of bar, editor's pick, etc) and it can give you a lotta suggestions. The hot areas are Adam's Morgan, U-Street, & Dupont Circle.

Dupont Circle is definitely more of a gay-oriented area than Adam's Morgan.

Neither of em is like Boystown in Chicago though.
