I have a 401k through John Hancock. They have 6 managed portfolios as well as about 80 individual funds I can contribute to. I have been earning about an 11% IRR this year

I have 6% of my weekly check deposited into my 401K. My company matches up to 6%, so ... yay.

I've been building one through Vanguard since I was 18...my current company doesn't offer it because I'm part time though.

i have a roth ira. i manage it myself. rates fluctuate like a mofo. it's probably not the best idea to play as i do.

historically, the stock market has the best annual return at 9% pre-inflation. but not all funds return the same. if you're gonna go the route of mutual funds, i'd suggest choosing something from vanguard, which has low fees and good reputation.

today we have a great new investing tool called ETF, electronically traded funds. they're basically a mutual fund with lower costs and they usually mimic some index, so the stocks aren't chosen by a human. in my opinion, investing in small cap value ETFs are your best bet. you also want some exposure to international markets. US has been great in the past, but who knows if we'll continue to be a powerhouse.

if you have more specific questions, feel free to ask me. i'm no expert, but i've read a lot of books and articles on finance and the stock market.

401k up 18% when compared to last year.
Roth IRA not sure probably up 10-12%

But i don't intend to use these as my only source of retirement fund.

QFT, you should plan for multiple sources of income when you retire. Right now I have my 401k which gets a 4%, 100% company match (can't pass up the free money) and my savings account. If I could afford to put more away I would.

5% of my weekly pay + 5% company match goes into a 401k.
