Good camera? Nikon D100 with 70-300 mm lens , good condition (reputable person), cheap. Opinions please.

It has the same sensor as the D70 but an older image processor so the pictures it produces are about the same but a hair not as nice looking, but it's more sorta kinda professional feeling than the D70 and has certain features that the D70 doesn't have.

A 70-300 lens on a dSLR like that is effectively multiplied by 1.5 so its field of view is equivalent to 105-450 mm. You'll need another lens to take anything other than far-away shots.

Further...do you know anything about how to take pictures or do you just plan to point and click?

I know a little, definitely not as much as I would like. I want to familiarize myself with SLR's as I plan to do some wedding photography in the near future. I am shooting one with my dad in April.

which 70-300mm lens? my guess is probably some cheapy lens that you can buy new for $200 or less.

I was originally going to get a D100 but it was discontinued to I got the D70. I have a friend that had the d100 for nearly 3 years and he upgraded to a D2x. His impression was that d70 is every as good as the d100 if not better in some areas.

But if you're on a budget, it's a good camera.

Save money for lenses. My d70 retail was $1000. I've spent 4x that on lenses and I'm no where near done.

The lens is a Nikon NIKKOR ED. I am on a tight budget right now as I am struggleing since I don't have any money from the insurance company for my car yet. I drive 55 mile (roundtrip) to school mon-fri. I am also trying to save money for me and my girlfriend to go to China in July to vist my sister and little brother. (I am going to propose on the Great Wall...Shhh....) But anyway, what I am trying to get around to is... would the D100 be a decent starter camera for the type of photography that I am wanting to get into?

Wedding...good luck!

If you understand ISOs, fill flash ratios, portrait compositions, general rules for depth of field, and how to scout out the light in a particular location on short notice...well then I guess you'll do fine.

You will want another lense if you want to shoot weddings.

I did little snapshots alongside a pro at my girlfriends, brothers wedding. Everyone loved them and I loved doing it. I am pretty sure I want to make a career out of it.

Do you have any other camera suggestions? I am not sure what would be best for this application. I want to get a DSLR regardless of what I do.
