If you got a flu shot
It's not a 100% vaccination since there's many different strands of the flu virus. It does eliminate the probability of getting it significantly though.
You had one in the past year? You need them every year.

I got a flu shot in September, then got the flu in late December/early January. While the shot significantly reduces your chance of getting the flu, as others said it's not 100% since there are many different flu strains roaming around and they are constantly mutating.
Many people get confused and think that a flu shot will protect them against the "common cold" - generally a mild feeling of illness that lasts for 1-2 days, a bit of stomach upset or a mild fever, and then you're good to go. The flu shot doesn't protect against this. It helps keep you from getting real "influenza" - which lasts for 1-2 weeks, keeps you nearly bedridden due to vomiting, nausea, high fever, diarrhea, muscle aches and pains, weakness, headaches, difficulty swallowing, an inability to keep down food and even liquids, and generally feeling like you want to die.
When I had the flu I ate 2 sandwiches in a 1 week period. Nothing else. I lost 10 lbs. in about 10-12 days. It took about 3-4 weeks for me to start eating normal again. I would have probably taken about 6 days off from work, but since I was already on vacation when it started I ended up only taking 3 days off from work. And I had a mild case - this same strain sent both of my grandparents to the hospital for several days. (I was spending Christmas at my grandparent's place and a lot of us got hit)
Are you really having "flu-like symptoms" or just the common cold?
