yes, he does sound depressed. he probably has alot on his mind. i wouldnt personalize his reaction. sometimes depressed people dont see how their depression affects them or those around them. so go kidnap the caveman and give him a good send off. as far as the girl friend, he will be meeting lots of new women while he is gone.

exact thing happened to this couple i know...except she's hot...not a whale and not underage.
he abandoned all his best friends so he can spend every moment with her. she was my friend...and he tried to get her to give up all HER friends too...because she cared for him...she kinda did...so i would only see her once in a blue moon...a few years later he finally realizes that he's a jackass when they broke up...
people do crazy things for relationships (ass)...but they'll realize it later when things go sour..that's when you laugh at them and say I TOLD YOU SO
