The reason businesses can't lie is because their lies cost customers money (ie denies right to property). Same for defamation or slander. But in American law at least, business != religion since "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" but can make laws about business.

but you could only sue him if he forced you to believe in his beliefs or tried to pass them off as fact and not just his beliefs.

See, works both ways.

It is my belief that religion is just as bad as a company that lies. It's based on lies and takes donations that people feel they are giving because of truth. But I believe they are being lied to.

Many people believe in Scientology as a religion. However, the founder of that "relgion" even said himself that anyone can start a religion on anything and make it profitable. He did.
