A New Jersey man with a history of mental problems went nuts on a New York-bound jetliner yesterday and stormed the cockpit as the plane prepared to take off from a Florida airport.
Authorities said Troy Rigby, 28, fought off six passengers who tried to subdue him, biting one on the hand before opening a door and jumping to the tarmac at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.
Broward County sheriff's deputies caught him running toward the terminal and zapped him to the ground with a stun gun when he resisted arrest.
It was unclear if Rigby was injured, but he was taken to Broward General Medical Center.
One man traveling with his family said Rigby got increasingly antsy as Continental Flight 408, delayed for about 30 minutes, waited to depart.
"He kept saying he was claustrophobic, that he wanted to speak to his mother and that he wanted to get off the plane," the passenger said.
Authorities said just as the Boeing 737 began to move, Rigby bolted from his seat and ran to the front of the plane, banging on windows and the cockpit door.
Paul Sigler, the first passenger to confront Rigby, paid for it.
"I'm 220 [pounds] and he's about 150 but he was so wound up he could have kicked my a--," said Sigler, who first tried to calm Rigby down, then struggled with him until five other passengers came to help.
He said Rigby bit him on the hand, then banged his own head on the fuselage wall "with my hand in between."
Rigby's sister Leslie, 37, said he was diagnosed as schizophrenic several years ago and recently stopped taking his meds.
"He called our mother yesterday and said he was going to commit suicide," she said. The sister said their uncle put Rigby on the plane against her wishes.
"I told him he needed psychiatric care first," she said.
Rigby will be charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, battery, resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer, authorities said. He also has an outstanding warrant for marijuana possession, they said.
The plane, carrying 116 passengers and a crew of five, eventually took off and arrived in New York late last night.

Come on lady, chill with the slang. You're writing an article for publication here, not talking about what happened to your friends in a bar.

h:haha, I noticed that too, Mike. It annoys the hell out of me when journalists use colloquialisms in their articles.
