Network attached storage
So I been thinking about getting an external hard drive for my laptop, but I think I might have found somethin better. It's basically the same thing as an external hard drive but instead of a usb or firewire port to hook directly to a computer, it has an ethernet port that you hook up to a router. Since I have a wireless router I can have the network attached storage hooked up to that and access it wirelessly. I think I might even be able to set up some kinda way to have it remotely accessible so I would be able to access it from anywhere. I have this one ... (OfficeMax $40 drama of 2005)
never tried the network feature though. From the reviews I read, nobody could get it to work properly. :hs:

I purchased one of those and had a huge fucken problem with it. The firmware that came with it totally sucked.
The drive would lock on me when transferring files larger than 100mb.
For some reason the static IP I set onto it kept being removed from it. So I searched and searched and found a good firmware to use.
Its java based so im in the process of creating my own.
The one im currently using resolved all my problems ( if you need it email me felipe_d2003@hotmail.com )
Im using a 120gb drive and it works flawlessly.
If you have any spare drives laying around you could pick up that enclosure on eBay for like 50 bucks. I believe manufactored by Argosy. the bios is by tritton

NAS is great...
On boxes that costs $5000 bucks (without drives).
BTW 100Mb/s = 12.5MB/s = max transfer speed of about 7MB/s under best conditions.

plus it's going to be freaking slow to transfer huge files wirelessly unless you're on 108+G bandwidth at FULL connection. External USB2 or Firewire would make things a lot easier.

Yes a directly connected external HDD via USB 2.0 will be faster. But just having a hard drive off in a room somewhere and accessing it via wireless is very very conveniant. And unless you always xfer large files (read: >100MB) then you won't notice a speed problem.
My vote is for the SLUG.
