the cable/dsl modem usually gives out one ip... so the other computers wont be able access the internet.
just get a router.

i got a compact linksys wireless router, its awesome.. just had to figure out the correct way to hook everything up

Linksys WRT54Gs are good but if you do lots of downloading with torrents and such you may run into problems. Best thing for the WRT54G is to upgrade to a aftermarket firmware like DD-WRT and or HyperWRT. They make these routers a whole lot better faster.
