Default serial #s

why does everything have serial #s?? I was wondering this earlier tonight while buying some food and I noticed that every item had a serial # in it and I wondered whats the purpose for this, can anyone explain?? I kinda figured out on my own that they're there to keep track of products and such but what happens when I buy the product and eat it or whatever and than throw it away what happens to that # does the assigned # with the product stay forever or do they assign new #s after awhile?? I have too much damn thinking time on my hands h:

cliffs: what the fukk are serial #'s for:thinking:

I always thought it was in case something got stolen, if you had the serial # written down...it'd be easier to find...especially if it's taken to a pawn shop.

on food/beverage they are lot/batch #'s. If a bad batch is found they can warn ppl by the code.

It's a lot easier to track diffrent types also.

I'm going to start a small DB for all the computer parts I have spares and installed. That way I can easily just lookup exactly what I have, where, and the specs of the part/pc.

I'm going to get a cheap label maker and make my own UPC type labels, then use a scanner and scan the things in to the DB.
