Come to think of it how many people have even seen "How Green Was My Valley"? yeah I thought not. Movies that are good rarely get awards of the kind Hoolywood hands out and back then there were no independent awards cermonies.

I understand what you mean but sometimes the social significance of a movie or a piece of work is not realized until many years down the road. You have to look at the statements a movie makes at the time, and then you have to look at the general publics willingness to look within themselves and the social climate of the times. This will account for why many movies are not given due credit until after their time.
